Overnights with Birth Family

One of Danielle's birth family members lives in town and wants Danielle to come over for an overnight visit.

On the surface, the answer seems easy.  Birth family contact is important.

But then there are complications.  The relative who is asking, from what we've gathered, seems to have some substance use/abuse issues, and has been observed hanging out with people who do. This person also doesn't have their own housing and rents a room from an adult, single, unrelated male.

Would you let your 16-year-old daughter spend the night with a birth family member who was renting a room from some guy?

I'm not really too keen about the idea of inviting Danielle's birth family, for the reasons I've described above, to spend the night at my house, either.

  1. I wouldn't let my 16 year old of any kind stay with any kind of relative renting a room from some guy!

  2. No, over night stays either way. There are reasons this kid is not living with relatives. Your kid is just to vulnerable.

  3. I don't understand why the housing situation is a problem--I've had friends who rented rooms like that--but the substance use/abuse? Uh, yeah, MAYBE supervised visits (...like, in public somewhere) would be okay. Overnights, regardless of where? No way in hell.

  4. No I would not. Maybe a supervised visit during the day at a neutral location.

  5. It does not sound like a wise idea to let Danielle go overnight (or possibly even unescorted) with this person until they are able to show that they are trustworthy, and are of sound character.
